In my last post I talked about the making of a page spread. I mentioned how it contained elements I could take and make into something new. That is what I want to talk about today. Now first I want to show a postcard I have already made.
This was not used making a grid. A grid is something I am still working on integrating into my workflow. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don’t. In this post I am going to take you through while I make a promotional flyer.
For some continuiety I will be using a grid to make this. A flyer can be all sorts of different sizes. From standard paper sizes to more specialized ones. I am making this one A6, with a 4×6 grid, standing up. This could f.ex. be used to hand out to people, putting in the magazine or to hang up to promote it.
To the right are the elements from the spread. The larger image at the back, the fram with rounded corners and the strip of colour. For the purpose of this I have used the same images. It felt easier. Looking at this, it could be a layout on itself. With a few tweeks to make it easier on the eyes.
On the left are the first attempt. Since this is a promotional flyer, I added some text; Magasinet – Out October 2026. I don’t think I used the grid well in this. Perhaps I tried a bit to hard to marry the design I had in mind and the grid. And the orientation might be wrong. When things are forced they rarely work out.
To the right is the second one I’m showing you. I tried some things with layer styles that did not work out. Then landed on using the grid like a base for squares and the letters. Now this just takes two elements from the spread, but you don’t have to always use all the elements. Below are the final result without the grid. And I added the nr., the month and the year of release up in the corner – using the same repeating square.
And that is how you can take elements from one thing and make them into something else. The grid are not a build in habit of mine, and so I do struggle a bit with it. But it is a nice base, and can be fun to play around with. In this one it did work out quite alright in the end.
